The South is undoubtedly the strongest supporter in America of the private school system. Southerners have long resented the role the Federal Government has assumed in the area of educaiton - a role far outside its constitutional limits. And now a new movement to greatly expand private education appears ready to take off. ‘Southern Baptists are moving to open their own schools, offering an alternative to public schools that would educate a new generation about biblical principles instead of popular culture.’ Demand for private education in South Carolina is very strong and should be fertile ground for the Southern Baptists’ push.

One well-known private school in SC is Warlaw Academy in Johnston. Its mission includes this statement, ‘In addition to our strong academic program, we emphasize the worthwhile values of honesty, patriotism, respect, compassion, and Christianity.’ Compare this to the sort of agenda of the government-run public schools, which are now ulimately under the US Federal Department of Education.


‘The European Union has urged the governor of Texas to stop all executions as the state prepares to carry out its 400th death penalty. The statement from the Portuguese presidency of the 27-nation bloc said: “The European Union strongly urges Governor Rick Perry to exercise all powers vested in his office to halt all upcoming executions and to consider the introduction of a moratorium in the State of Texas.”
