When one seriously questions not the immediate feasibility of the establishment of another Palmetto Republic (as has twice existed: 1776-1789 and 1860-1865) but rather whether South Carolinians would benefit from independence from Washington, DC… the opponents of self-determination would probably prefer to change the subject. This is because it is unquestionable that South Carolina has suffered terribly under Federal rule.
If we look at really any set of raw statistics from the late 1700’s, a period in which the Federal Government was much less powerful and was subservient to the precise written commands of the Constitution, we see that SC was either the wealthiest or among the very wealthiest States in not only North America but in much of the entire world. It is true that a serious social evil – human enslavement – then existed in SC. Yet it is also true that this evil existed in many other lands of that age and survives to this very day in several countries around the globe. This “peculiar institution” of that age is regularly used to condemn the State, culture and most of the people. Meanwhile, the serious social evils that prevailed in the large Northeastern cities of North America of the era are generally excused because of the fact that eventually, over many decades, these evils were eventually phased out. However, this is truthfully an unfair comparison – one land had the opportunity to self-develop and the other did not – one land was invaded and the other land did the invading.
In 1860, South Carolina left the Federal Union because she no longer wanted to be a member of a Union that was headed by a radical new very sectarian party which was financed and supported by Northeastern interests entirely opposed to those of South Carolina. Of course, this was a selfish interest which motivated South Carolinians to do this. In truth it was selfish interest that drove SC to help create and then join the Union originally though then, wasn’t it? Selfish interest motivates all State actions around the world. And when South Carolina voted unanimously 169-0 in convention to leave the Union she was immediately lured into war against the much larger power she had just left over the occupation the small, stategic island in Charleston harbor. South Carolina was the probably the biggest loser of continental war that followed. Nearly all cities and towns in the State of any size at all were looted and burned. A large portion of the male citizenry was killed. The agricultural basis of the State’s economy was nearly entirely destroyed. More than a decade of military occupation followed. Nearly all of the State’s former leaders and citizenry were disenfranchised. As a result of these tragic conditions the State of South Carolina was pushed from a position of relative tremendous wealth to that of extreme poverty and corruption basically equal to the Third World.
If we fast forward to the the present we now see extremely discouraging conditions in South Carolina. Viewing the State from the history just laid out, we see South Carolina as a State which has long been exploited and abused. The abuse goes back to 1865, eases slightly in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, and then re-strengthens starting in the 1950’s. Since that time the State has been a victim not only of gross economic exploitation, she is now being actively and energetically colonized on a scale that amounts to cultural genocide. To understand the situation, one must understand the relative antiquity of South Carolina and the fact the Scots-Irish majority of the State consider themselves to be native, having settled the land and created an organic culture and tradition that predates the United States by more than a hundred years. There is a strong identity in the Palmetto State as proven by the abundant amount of State flags and decorations throughout the State. In fact, State pride is practically a ways of life in South Carolina. Undoubtedly, the organic culture and pride in the people of South Carolina though will certainly be lost if present trends continue. This is because of the hundreds of thousands of Yankee migrants and now younger folks who are settling in the State. The effects on the native culture would need to be documented in another article, but it is entirely truthful to say that now there are many areas of the State where a foreign culture and people dominate and where the old culture and people are hardly to be found at all. How does it benefit South Carolinians to disappear? And the old textile industry that was built during that period of relatively relaxed Northeastern exploitation of the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s, has been dismantled almost over night thanks to new international deals signed into force by Washington, DC. It is also true that South Carolinians have opposed almost every single major piece of Federal legislation in the last 150 years and yet they have all been put into law. And today, only Mississippi suffers worse economic conditions than does South Carolina. The large Third World influx from Latin America is alarming a majority of the people of the State and has begun to radically alter the local culture and strain public services to their limits in places that were already cash-starved. If we examine the total record of last 150 years of Federal rule over the State of South Carolina we can see clearly that the State has suffered, her people have been grossly abused and now they are being forced into minority status in their own native lands thanks to Federal immigration and economic policies.
As a free and independent Republic though South Carolina would overnight be able to solve many serious and pressing problems that are un-fixable at the present. She would immediately be able to close her borders to cheap Third World labor and be able to begin enacting and enforcing law that would through attrition relieve South Carolinians of the masses of illegal aliens within her borders. This would instantly relieve grave cultural and demographic pressures. As well, she would be exempt from failed Federal international policies. Every year the State basically gives through the Federal income tax tens of millions of dollars to the Federal government. For this she is supposed to be protected and be able to participate directly in the US economy, primarily. That is largely the deal. At some point though (say, perhaps when the central government becomes hell-bent on a foreign policy that totally contradicts the sound parting advice of George Washington to avoid tangling alliances and the like) the benefits of membership fail to equal the benefits that would clearly be gained by exodus. Indeed, many South Carolinians are today scratching their heads and wondering where any benefits are. As a free Republic, South Carolina could avoid the failed and terribly mis-named ‘War on Terror’ by preventing further non-Western immigration and avoiding further involvement in the Middle East altogether. These twin actions would all but assure that South Carolinians would not be targeted for violence by Islamic terrorists. The present war is one that South Carolinians do not need and should not participate in. Sadly, any student of politics and history can assure us that this Federal war will be followed by another – the Federal government is simply too entangled and plugged-in to disengage at the present. But by disengaging from the beast, South Carolina can likely avoid these conflicts that do not involve her people and can almost assuredly benefit her people in countless other ways by opting out of a failed and increasingly unstable and unworkable regime.
This though is a conversation and analysis that the powers that be do not want us to have – for it could potentially reduce their power a bit and that is their constant fear. Patriots care little for alien imperial power though – especially over their native people and land. We South Carolinians are indeed talking about independence despite their wishes. We have never been a subservient people - nor shall we fade away as such. In this hour, pressed on all sides, South Carolinians of backbone and substance will resist this regime, its influence and its power over us. We are not a province of the Federal empire. We are a free people and only we shall determine our future – no alien power shall do this for us. This is the pledge of all true South Carolinians, as it was the pledge of our ancestors before us.
Long live the Palmetto Republic! Death to imperialism!
