PRESIDENT’S MANSION in COLUMBIA

The President’s Mansion was built in 1855 and selected as residence for our chief executive in 1868, during Federal Military Occupation. It remained so after the “Reconstruction” occupation was withdrawn.

FIRST PRESIDENT of SOUTH CAROLINA

 John Rutledge (1739-1800)

March 26, 1776 – Four months before the Declaration of Independence was signed, South Carolina adopted a state constitution drafted by a Provincial Congress becoming the first republic in America. John Rutledge was elected as the state’s first president and Henry Laurens as its vice-president making the two the first president and vice-president in America.

The original title in our Consititution for the chief executive of South Carolina was “President.” John Rutledge was the first to be elected to this esteemed position. The title was later changed to “Governor.” We support the re-establishment of the title as “President” to better denote our status as a sovereign Republic. Upon our independence the title shall surely be changed back – if not before.
